Work continues to move steadily along. The rainwater runoff system is largely in place, grading is ongoing, and a portion of North Avenue has been re-paved.

The rains have Excavation of poor soils and import of suitable fill and grading are ongoing. The heavy rains have slowed things down a bit, but work on the storm water detention system and water lines have begun.

Although the weather is cold, it’s nice and dry, so it’s a great time for the big equipment to be out there moving earth around in preparation for the stormwater drainage features and foundation!

Brush Clearing Under Way

A few of the large trees on the lot had to be taken out, but many were able to be saved and will serve to shade the west side of the library with its reading area along the long, curved, wall of windows.

Demolition

Demolition began on Wednesday, December 6th of the two existing structures on the new library’s lot. Some of the building materials were able to be salvaged and the rest of the debris is rapidly being cleared.

Groundbreaking Ceremony

The Groundbreaking Ceremony was held at 4pm on Thursday, October 20, 2011 at the new location: 4818 West Street, Forest Park (corner of West Street at North Avenue, across from the back parking lot of the First Baptist Church of Forest Park).

A cold front coming through made the proceedings chilly, but well over 50 people turned out to view the plans and express their support for the new library. Members of the local community and elected officials, representatives from the Fire Department and the Police Department, the Library Board, the Friends of the Library, and the media were in attendance. County Commissioners Gail Hambrick, Wole Ralph, and Chairman Eldrin Bell all spoke thoughtfully and supportively for the library, as did Alan Harkness of the Georgia Public Library Service.
